KUKA AG is now part of the umati community

What expectations do you have of umati, what do you expect from the partnership?

The partnership with umati enables a valuable exchange with the common goal of representing OPC UA for the entire mechanical engineering sector. The expectation is clearly to further promote standardisation and to make it usable across all machines. umati brings together a strong group of machine and plant manufacturers who focus primarily on supporting small and medium-sized companies.

What advantages does umati offer your company and your customers?

The form of presentation via the umati dashboard is a clear added value. Thanks to the standardisation initiative at the VDMA, reliable filling of the dashboards is possible, which makes interoperability really visible. The uniform display in the dashboard depending on the machine type — whether machine tool or robot — makes it possible to display machine-specific information and make OPC UA tangible.

How do you evaluate the expansion of the umati initiative to the entire mechanical engineering industry?

Although there are many different types of machines in mechanical engineering whose behaviour or operating data are very specific, all machines nevertheless have similar information, such as energy consumption data or operating counters.

The goal of umati and the VDMA is to determine this common information across the entire mechanical engineering sector and to present it in a standardised way in OPC UA. We support this goal.
