umati has new partner GEWATEC GmbH und Co KG

GEWATEC GmbH und Co KG is now part of the umati community

  • What expectations do you have of umati, what do you can expect from the partnership?

While our customers have rules and standards for most processes, there are unfortunately very few standards in the IT sector. In the area of interfaces in particular, the lack of standards repeatedly results in high and, to a certain extent, unnecessary effort to connect systems with one to another. With umati, we see a great opportunity in the shop floor area to connect peripherals quickly and easily.

  • What advantages does umati offer your company and your customers?

It is not uncommon for the costs of connecting two production systems to be disproportionately high in relation to the purchase of the actual software. Especially when it comes to retrofitting, the customers have to pay dearly for the connectivity modules afterwards. If all manufacturers were to follow an umati standard, we and our customers would have the oportunnity of connecting production systems via plug-and-work in the future. Customers do not have to deal with manufacturer-specific interfaces, suppliers can make commitments to connectivity much more quickly.

  • How do you rate the extension of the umati initiative to the entire mechanical engineering sector?

Information about the manufacturing process is primarily collected where the parts are produced – at the machine. If the digitization of production is to succeed in the future, simple, standardized access to the process and production data is required. umati has the potential to become the standard MES connector in the future.
